Student and other identity cards

In Europe, students receive a discount on anything that might be considered “educational” and on many things that aren’t. Museums, tours, and other cultural attractions, often have discounted admissions or fares for those bearing an International Student Identification Card (ISIC). Non-students under 26 and teachers can get most of the same discounts with their own respective cards (the “GO 25″ card and the International Teachers’ Identity card). These are highly worth obtaining and can save you megabucks on an incredible number of things. Teachers, for example, get into Paris museums for nothing. Any student-oriented travel agent, such as Council Travel or Travel CUTS in the States, can either issue an ISIC on the spot or tell you where you can get one. You’ll need a small photograph and proof that you’re a full-time student. If you are a teacher or “youth,” the same agencies can issue you your respective card. For seniors, proof that you are over 50 will get you discounts all over Europe.

When in Europe, and when buying tickets to get there, you should get into the habit of chanting “Is there a student discount?” every time you pull out some cash. This includes airlines, trains, ferries, museums, theaters, funeral parlors - everything, really. When in doubt, ask, and you will be amazed at the money you save.

If you are eligible for one of these cards and don’t get one, you will kick yourself all across Europe. In the States, call ©1-800/ GET-AN-ID for more information, or ask at any budget travel agent.
