Remember, if you’re connecting between two flights on your way home, you can’t simply go to the gate for your second flight at your stopover airport, even if you have tickets in hand. If you are flying Virgin Atlantic out of London Heathrow be aware that (due to strong tensions between British Airways and Virgin) the Virgin Atlantic gates are a LONG way from security checkpoints - I’ve walked out there a couple of times and was afraid I was going to fall off the edge of the world.
