11. The Black Hole of Barcelona. Barcelona sells itself as the Spanish city of the future, and yet it has fewer international trains than your average French farm village. Well, it’s not quite that bad, but it sure feels like it. You may think that just because Barcelona is such a huge city, you can take your Eurail pass to the station and hop a train to wherever you want whenever you feel like it. Not A Chance. Getting out of Barcelona, especially in the summer, is a nightmare of roasting heat, full-to-the-roof trains, and a station that resembles a riot. If you choose to go to Barcelona,check very carefully to see when you can get out of the city - even the pitifully small number of international trains don’t run every day. Also, make a reservation for your departure train, and do it the second you know when you want to leave.
