6 Luxembourg. This small country refers to itself as “Europe in jytiniature,” with some justification. The countryside, with its river valleys and storybook castles, is beautiful, and there is a small winegrowing region near the capital (actually, the whole country is “near the capital”). If you really want to get to know a small part of Europe, a two-week trip here would be perfect.

7. Auschwitz/Birkenau. Not in Germany, as many believe, but rather in southern Poland, about an hour by bus from Cracow. Auschwitz, the original camp of that name, is tiny, and was used to house slave laborers. When most people think of “Auschwitz,” they are actually thinking of Birkenau, an enormous complex located about two miles from the original Auschwitz camp.
