For some reason, a large percentage of taxi drivers everywhere, with the notable exception of London, are scheming, lying crooks who see impoverished travelers as little more than walking piggy banks to be emptied as quickly as possible. This is particularly true in France, Italy, Greece, and especially in Prague, where cabbies have a reputation for thieving and violence akin to that of the Mafia in Sicily. Most of us poor travelers will go months without seeing the inside of a cab, but here’s the scoop if one becomes necessary.
- Single women, as always, beware. Don’t just get in a cab and tune out your surroundings. Follow the progress of your driver, and if it looks as if he’s going somewhere other than where you told him, speak up or get out at a stop. Silence is the best response to suggestive comments.
- At airports there is almost always public transport available. If someone, especially a taxi driver, tells you there isn’t, look for yourself. Don’t let yourself be pushed toward the taxi stand by a “helpful” porter or airport employee - he may be getting a cut of your fare.
