(Almost) Being There

- When you make your reservation, get explicit directions to the place you will be staying, including metro stops, cross streets, prominent landmarks in the area, etc. Once again, make it easy for yourself on that first day.

If you plan on meeting another traveler while in Europe, be aware that this can be difficult. Try and pick a very specific location (such as “touching the statue of Goya outside the Prado in Madrid” and not “at the Eiffel Tower") Don’t plan to meet outdoors at night or in a place that charges admission. Also, it’s a good idea to have a number, even one at home, that both of you can call to leave messages, in case plans change or you miss each other. Another small fruit of bitter experience.

If you live alone, don’t forget all of the standard “going-on-a-trip” things to do: empty the refrigerator, stop the paper, make arrangements for plants and pets, put a vacation hold on your mail at the post office, etc. As a personal request, please take special care with pets. Never, ever, just lock a cat out (let alone a dog), with a few pounds of dry food in a bowl.If you have a car, especially an old one, you might want to fill the gas tank and disconnect the battery before letting it sit for two months. Or have someone drive it every week or so, if you trust your friend not to take your faithful sled on a road trip. Get completely packed, down to your toothbrush, the day before you leave. Trust me on this one. Don’t leave any packing for the day of your trip. If you pack on the day you depart, you will, without fail, forget something.Remember to leave the penknives off your key ring and/or take them out of your daypack and check them. Those wise souls among you who are not checking anything will have to buy a knife in Europe, or mail one ahead.

Arrive at the airport at least two hours prior to your takeoff time, especially if you are taking a non-US airline or a charter. New security regulations have increased the time needed for check-in. A frantic dash to the airport, let alone a missed flight, is a poor way to start any trip. Better to get the lines over with and relax. Parking at most airports is very expensive and not very secure. If at all possible, get a ride from someone.
